Peter Benjamin Mandelson, Baron Mandelson (b. 1953), is a British Labour politician, former European Commissioner for Trade, and a central figure in the New Labour project. The Epstein archive reveals one of the most extensive and deeply compromising relationships of any political figure in the collection: over 6,200 emails spanning 2002 to 2016, documenting a 14-year intimate friendship with Jeffrey Epstein that persisted before, during, and long after Epstein's criminal conviction for sex offences involving minors.
The correspondence exposes multiple explosive dimensions. In November 2009, Epstein forwarded Mandelson a news article explicitly referencing "underaged girls who had sex with" Epstein; Mandelson's response — "This is interesting but, as the tip of an iceberg, revealing the rest needs careful planning. What is the plan?" — demonstrates he understood the scope of Epstein's criminal exposure and was coordinating strategy rather than expressing concern for victims. In July 2009, when Epstein proposed "bold moves," Mandelson asked whether the areas in question were "Policy, social or sexual?" — to which Epstein replied "all." Epstein explicitly discussed "the worry of future blackmails" regarding Mandelson's vulnerabilities. In March 2011, Epstein forwarded Mandelson a detailed list of sexual abuse allegations against Ghislaine Maxwell, including the directing of underage girls in sex acts and the surveillance-taping of sexual encounters involving named individuals. Mandelson was confirmed by island estate managers as having holidayed on Little St. James with his boyfriend Reinaldo.
Beyond the sexual dimension, Epstein functioned as Mandelson's strategic adviser on UK domestic politics, post-government career planning, and international financial relationships. Epstein brokered meetings between Mandelson and Jes Staley at JPMorgan, forwarded Mandelson's insider political analysis to Wall Street contacts, and facilitated introductions to Russian oligarchs — all while a registered sex offender.
Background#
Peter Mandelson served as Labour MP for Hartlepool (1992–2004), holding cabinet positions as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1998) and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1999–2001). He resigned from cabinet twice under controversy — the first time over an undisclosed home loan, the second over allegations relating to the Hinduja passport affair. He served as European Commissioner for Trade (2004–2008) before returning to the UK cabinet as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and First Secretary of State (2008–2010) under Gordon Brown, effectively functioning as deputy prime minister. He was created Baron Mandelson in 2008. After leaving government in 2010, he founded the advisory firm Global Counsel. (Wikipedia)

Knowledge of Sex Crimes: "The Tip of an Iceberg"
On November 7, 2009, Epstein forwarded Mandelson a Google Alert containing a Broward New Times article titled "Scott Rothstein: The Jeffrey Epstein And Bill Clinton Ploy," which explicitly referenced "numerous underaged girls who had sex with Palm Beach billionaire and convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein." Mandelson's response, sent the following day, was:
"This is interesting but, as the tip of an iceberg, revealing the rest needs careful planning. What is the plan?"
Epstein replied: "no plan yet..Like you, unfortunately it is up to me." (Epstein to Mandelson, Nov 7–8, 2009; Mandelson's reply)
Mandelson's use of "the tip of an iceberg" in response to an article about Epstein's child sex offences — suggesting he understood there was far more beneath the surface — and his question about "the plan" indicate strategic coordination rather than moral revulsion. The phrase "revealing the rest needs careful planning" is profoundly ambiguous: whether it refers to exposing Rothstein's fraud or managing Epstein's own legal exposure, either interpretation confirms Mandelson was engaged in strategy discussions with a convicted sex offender about matters directly connected to his crimes.
"Policy, Social or Sexual?"
On July 20, 2009, Epstein emailed Mandelson: "bold moves ,, needed for september. you have nothing to lose .." Mandelson's response was striking:
"In what areas..? Policy, social or sexual?"
Epstein replied: "all plus educational. financial, -you have nothing to lose, it makes you even more powerful." (Epstein–Mandelson exchange, Jul 20, 2009; additional copy)
That Mandelson explicitly listed "sexual" as a category of Epstein's proposed assistance — and Epstein confirmed "all" — demonstrates Mandelson understood that Epstein's facilitation extended into sexual domains. Epstein's promise that this would make Mandelson "even more powerful" suggests these "bold moves" were being framed as a package of services encompassing policy, social standing, finances, and sexuality.
Graphic Sex Abuse Allegations Forwarded Directly to Mandelson
On March 4, 2011, Epstein forwarded Mandelson a complete list of sexual abuse allegations against Ghislaine Maxwell, originally sent by Mail on Sunday journalist Annette Witheridge to Maxwell's lawyer. The forwarded questions detailed:
- A 15-year-old girl being directed by Maxwell in bisexual encounters with Epstein
- Maxwell keeping sex toys and costumes, wearing "black vinyl during sex sessions"
- The victim being "required to have sex with friends of Ms Maxwell and Mr Epstein, including Glenn Dubin, Les Wexner, Ehud Barak, former Senator George Mitchell and Stephen Kosslyn"
- Maxwell introducing the victim to Prince Andrew, who "groped both girls," followed by directed sexual encounters and an "orgy" on Little St. James
- Surveillance cameras that "taped the sex sessions and taped even in the bathroom"
- Epstein and Maxwell asking "explicit questions about what went on" after the victim's encounters with their male friends
(Epstein forwarding Maxwell allegations to Mandelson, Mar 4, 2011)
This email places beyond doubt that Mandelson was made fully aware of the specific nature and scope of the sexual abuse allegations against Epstein and Maxwell — including the involvement of named individuals, the exploitation of minors, and the apparent surveillance apparatus — years before these allegations became widely public.
Blackmail Vulnerability: "Future Blackmails"
On January 22, 2010, in an exchange about JPMorgan's planned cancellation of a new London building project, Epstein wrote:
"no, it was due to your tax, alone. and the worry of future blackmails. - however, now with obamas frontal attack, I think they should postpone the announcement. I would like to think how YOU can use this to your advantage. does he cancel and then have you resurrect the relationship.. careful planning req."
Mandelson had written: "They sd cancel US in light of Obama.. Alistair and I need to talk to Jess in Davos." (Epstein–Mandelson exchange, Jan 22, 2010)
Epstein's explicit reference to "the worry of future blackmails" in connection with Mandelson's tax position reveals that Mandelson faced blackmail vulnerability, and that Epstein was advising him on how to strategically manage it. The reference to "Alistair" (Alistair Darling, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer) and "Jess" (Jes Staley at JPMorgan) at Davos demonstrates the intertwining of political, financial, and personal agendas. The phrase "careful planning req." echoes the "careful planning" language from the "iceberg" email two months earlier.
Prince Andrew: "Without Andrew It Would Not Have Gone Nuclear"
On November 6, 2016 — the eve of the US presidential election — Epstein and Mandelson exchanged messages in which Epstein wrote: "in hindsight . you were right about staying away from andrew. I was right in your staying with rinaldo." Mandelson replied:
"Yes, without Andrew it would not have gone nuclear. Did you advise me to stay with R? Such a handful but loyal and never embarrassing."
(Epstein–Mandelson exchange, Nov 6, 2016; additional copy)
This exchange is among the most significant in the archive. Mandelson explicitly acknowledged that Prince Andrew's association with Epstein was what made the scandal "go nuclear," and confirmed that he had strategically distanced himself from Andrew to avoid similar fallout. The implication is that Mandelson understood the Epstein scandal's full destructive potential and managed his own exposure accordingly — not by severing ties with Epstein himself, but by avoiding the most publicly toxic associate. The conversation also reveals Epstein claimed credit for advising Mandelson on his romantic relationship with Reinaldo.
In the same exchange, Epstein coached Mandelson on media protection: "peter, in your disclaimer at the bottom of your emails you should add, copyright - all rights reserved. this makes it problematic for a newspaper to print without consent." (Epstein to Mandelson, Nov 6, 2016)
Epstein as Political Strategist: Advising on Gordon Brown
On November 29, 2009, while Mandelson served as First Secretary of State, Epstein was actively coaching him on how to handle Prime Minister Gordon Brown (referred to as "gb"). The exchange began with Epstein's cryptic opener: "I never mention you to Landon.. keep it that way."
Epstein advised: "not iniate, tell gb you see the winds blowing and you are loyal, first second and third... i don;t suggest you tell him to step down." He added: "he would be stressed not knowing what you really think, his fear of your unknown move will drive him to start to undermine you, just in case." Mandelson responded: "He will immed push panic button - highly sensitised to movement of my eyebrow." Epstein also asked: "while bens view might bolster yours. what does tony say?" — referencing Ben Wegg-Prosser (Mandelson's former adviser) and Tony Blair.
In the same thread, Epstein interjected crude sexual banter: "are you sure the backpressure from you lack of sex. is not turning your brain into fois gras." (Epstein–Mandelson exchange, Nov 29, 2009; additional copy)
This demonstrates that a convicted child sex offender was providing real-time strategic counsel to a sitting senior UK cabinet minister on how to manage the Prime Minister — while simultaneously engaging in sexually crude commentary.
Sexual Banter and Personal Intimacy
The correspondence reveals an unusually intimate personal dynamic. On October 5, 2009, Epstein suggested Mandelson could become Prime Minister if he married Princess Anne. Mandelson replied: "I'll get straight on to it." Epstein: "you getting straight is too horrible to imagine." Mandelson: "I'd be so boring." Epstein: "I was referring to your appendage, not your proclivity." (Epstein–Mandelson exchange, Oct 5, 2009; continuation)
Reinaldo: Epstein's Control Over Mandelson's Personal Life
Epstein was deeply involved in Mandelson's relationship with his partner, Reinaldo Avila da Silva. On November 18, 2009, Epstein wrote: "I can deal ithw Rinaldo.. Since we have supported his dream of osteopath, against all our wishes, only because we love him and think he is cut out to do certain things." (Epstein to Mandelson, Nov 18, 2009)
On November 24, 2011, Epstein directed his staff to arrange accommodation for Reinaldo: "reinaldao needs an apt for a few days, peters boyfriend, please organize." (Epstein forwarding Mandelson's request, Nov 24, 2011)
By November 2016, Epstein was claiming credit for the relationship's survival: "I was right in your staying with rinaldo." Mandelson acquiesced: "Did you advise me to stay with R? Such a handful but loyal and never embarrassing." (Nov 6, 2016 exchange)
JPMorgan Brokerage: The Jes Staley Channel
Epstein served as an active intermediary between Mandelson and JPMorgan, particularly its investment bank CEO Jes Staley. The correspondence reveals a systematic pattern:
- June 5, 2009: Epstein told Staley: "well, for all intents and purposes peter mandelson is now deputy prime minister." (Epstein to Staley)
- January 24, 2010: Epstein sent an email to both Staley and Mandelson simultaneously about Obama's anti-banking rhetoric. (Three-way email)
- January 27, 2010: Staley asked Epstein: "Were you able to arrange a meeting with Mandelson or Darling?" — requesting introductions to both the UK Business Secretary and Chancellor through a convicted sex offender. (Staley to Epstein)
- February 9, 2010: Staley informed Epstein: "Its Mandelson coming to NY." (Staley to Epstein)
- May 27, 2010: Mandelson sent Epstein details of the Lujiazui Forum in Shanghai, saying JPMorgan should be represented. Epstein forwarded this to Staley: "I think he is right. you should read the attachments." (Mandelson via Epstein to Staley)
- March 2009 (reported): A Daily Mail journalist inquired whether Mandelson had asked Epstein to contact JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon while Epstein was on day release from prison. Epstein's lawyer responded: "ignoring." (Daily Mail inquiry, Mar 16, 2011)
Banking Intelligence: LIBOR and Insider Analysis
On July 15, 2012, Epstein asked Mandelson: "what do you know of the libor scandal.. do you know the other sat barclay.. lets talk tomorow." Mandelson responded with a lengthy professional analysis from his firm Global Counsel about the Bob Diamond resignation and the LIBOR-fixing scandal. Epstein then forwarded this entire memo directly to Jes Staley at JPMorgan. (Epstein–Mandelson–Staley LIBOR exchange, Jul 15–16, 2012)
Separately, on July 5, 2010, shortly before leaving government, Mandelson told Epstein: "Just had lunch with RBS ceo. He says I should not worry too much about putting a little distance between govt and what I do next. I need to be sanitised!" (Mandelson to Epstein, Jul 5, 2010)
This pattern reveals Epstein functioning as a conduit for high-grade political intelligence about UK financial regulation, channeling Mandelson's insider analysis directly to Wall Street decision-makers.
Post-Government Career Planning
Epstein served as Mandelson's primary adviser on his transition from government to private sector:
- June 24, 2010: Mandelson reported: "Just had three hour dinner with Lee Kuan Yew. He is prepared to help me in China. Thinks that I need a 'perch', a bank." (Mandelson to Epstein)
- June 30, 2010: Mandelson forwarded an email from intermediary Martin Armstrong about a role at Deutsche Bank as adviser to Anshu Jain, with a proposed "retainer of 1 million Dollars per annum and a discretionary bonus" of "somewhere between 4 and 10 million dollars per annum." (Mandelson to Epstein)
- July 13, 2010: Mandelson forwarded a Jes Staley email to Epstein, commenting: "Nice guy, jes. I am getting very anxious about how I am going to earn my living from August 13!" (Mandelson to Epstein)
- January 20, 2011: Mandelson asked Epstein about a business contact recruiting him for a Li Ka Shing deal. Epstein warned: "he is also trying to involve sultan, no one i know knows him, I fear he is a fake." (Epstein–Mandelson exchange)
Russian Connections
Mandelson actively facilitated introductions between Epstein and Russian contacts. On November 11, 2010, Epstein's assistant emailed a contact: "My name is assistant to Jeffrey Epstein. I was given your email by Peter Mandelson. I'm writing to see what the possibilities are of Jeffrey and Oleg to meet in Moscow next week Tuesday or Wednesday?" (Epstein assistant email, Nov 11, 2010)
On October 23, 2011, Mandelson texted Epstein from Moscow: "Sitting in club 35 in moscow after manicure, pedicure, massage, swim, waiting for omelette. Call me..." (Mandelson to Epstein from Moscow)
Ghislaine Maxwell: The Early Relationship (2002)
The Epstein archive reveals that Mandelson's connection to the Epstein circle predated the peak email period, originating through Ghislaine Maxwell. In June 2002, the two exchanged flirtatious messages. Mandelson wrote: "I love disgusting. That's why I am wild and dangerous, and twice fallen...." Maxwell responded: "You spoiled Jeffrey's lunch. Pete I have warned you about that before. Behave or you will be punished like the bad boy you are." Mandelson: "I am feeling starved of contact." Maxwell: "Pete, think of it this way, every time you do not hear from me it means that I am busy working to keep you to the style you have become accustomed to." (Maxwell–Mandelson exchange, Jun 2002)
In the same exchange, Mandelson asked about leveraging George Mitchell for "political/business advice on Europe" he could provide to companies in New York and Washington — an early indication of the intertwining of political access and commercial opportunity. (Additional messages)
In September 2002, Mandelson wrote to Maxwell: "At the moment I feel so low that I can hardly communicate but I will pull myself together... Missing you. Love P." Maxwell replied: "Pete, what is wrong, I am here for you. Call me - Clinton sd he will do what you want at the conference." (Mandelson–Maxwell exchange, Sep 2002)
Maxwell also referenced travel plans involving Epstein and Bill Clinton: "JE and are will be in Europe coming w/Clinton that week of the 1st Oct and we would love to..." (Maxwell to Mandelson) In a separate message, Maxwell described "flying my helicopter from PB to the Island" and discussed "plans for the money." (Maxwell to Mandelson)
Visits to Epstein Properties#
Little St. James Island
Mandelson's visit to Epstein's private Caribbean island, Little St. James, was confirmed by the island's estate managers Cathy and Miles Alexander in a March 12, 2011 Daily Mail article found in the Epstein archive: "Peter Mandelson holidayed there with his long-term boyfriend Reinaldo, who suffered sunburn and whined about it 'like a baby', says Cathy." The article, captioned "Friends in high places: Lord Mandelson has also vacationed on Epstein's island," appeared alongside the Alexanders' account of watching "with increasing concern the beautiful girls who paraded about the house topless or naked whenever their boss was in residence," including girls who "looked very young-looking — about 16 or 17." (Daily Mail article in Epstein archive, Mar 12, 2011)
On March 5, 2010, Epstein casually texted Mandelson: "On ny wat to island." Mandelson responded about Beijing opportunities, and Epstein replied: "Good, don't take risks. The opportunity is too great." (Epstein–Mandelson exchange, Mar 5, 2010)
New York Mansion
On April 4, 2013, Mandelson attended a dinner at Epstein's New York mansion alongside Woody Allen, Soon-Yi Previn, Ehud Barak, Jes Staley, and Mort Zuckerman. Epstein's assistant Lesley Groff confirmed the guest list in an internal email. (Dinner planning email, Apr 3, 2013)
