Elon Musk is an entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter). Born in South Africa in 1971, he has become one of the world's wealthiest individuals through his ventures in electric vehicles, space technology, and social media. The Epstein archive documents 692 emails involving Musk between 2012 and 2017, revealing a more complex relationship than Musk has publicly acknowledged, with both Epstein initiating persistent contact and Musk showing periods of active interest before ultimately distancing himself.

The correspondence reveals that Epstein pursued Musk persistently over several years, proposing island visits, meetings at various properties, and social gatherings. While Musk participated in at least one documented meeting—a February 2013 lunch at SpaceX headquarters—the archive shows he declined multiple island invitations and most proposed meetings. However, the emails also show Musk initiated at least one island visit attempt in December 2013 and made schedule adjustments to accommodate meetings with Epstein. Musk has publicly stated that he regarded Epstein as "a creep" and declined repeated overtures, though the 2019 statement to Vanity Fair that Epstein "tried repeatedly to get me to visit his island. I declined" is contradicted by emails showing Musk's own proactive coordination of at least one island visit that was ultimately cancelled by Epstein.

The archive contains no evidence that Musk visited Epstein's island, attended parties with minors, or participated in any criminal activity. The correspondence shows an initial period of engagement (2012-2013) followed by increasingly brief and noncommittal responses, with evidence suggesting SpaceX email systems were blocking Epstein's messages by December 2014.

Background#

Elon Reeve Musk was born June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. He moved to Canada in his late teens, studied at the University of Pennsylvania, and co-founded PayPal in the late 1990s. In 2002, he founded SpaceX with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and enabling Mars colonization. He joined Tesla Motors in 2004 as an investor and chairman, becoming CEO in 2008 and leading the company to prominence in the electric vehicle industry.

By the time period documented in the Epstein archive (2012-2017), Musk was already a prominent figure in technology and business circles. He was married to British actress Talulah Riley from 2010 to 2012, remarried her in 2013, and divorced again in 2016. During this period, he was building SpaceX's commercial launch capabilities and expanding Tesla's vehicle lineup.

Following the release of Epstein-related documents in January 2026, media coverage documented Musk's communications with Epstein, showing more extensive contact than Musk had previously acknowledged. In 2019, Musk told Vanity Fair that Epstein "tried repeatedly to get me to visit his island. I declined." While the archive confirms Epstein extended many such invitations and that no island visit occurred, it also shows Musk initiated at least one detailed visit attempt in December 2013, making multiple schedule adjustments before Epstein cancelled, contradicting the characterization of passive declination.

Initial Contact Through Elite Networks#

The Epstein-Musk connection appears to have formed through the Edge Foundation, an exclusive intellectual salon organized by literary agent John Brockman. The archive documents that both Musk and Epstein attended at least three intimate Edge Foundation dinners together:

March 1, 2011 - Edge Dinner, Long Beach, California (guest list): Both "Elon Musk, Tesla Motors, SpaceX, SolarCity" and "Talulah Riley, Actor" were listed alongside "Jeffrey Epstein, Money Manager & Science Philanthropist" at this dinner of approximately 20 guests. Other attendees included Jeff Bezos, Sergey Brin, Bill Gates, Danny Hillis, and Marissa Mayer. These dinners were highly confidential; Brockman's invitations stated "please keep this invitation, which is for you only, under the radar."

July 17, 2011 - Edge Science Dinner, San Francisco (guest list): Both "Elon Musk" and "Talulah Musk" appeared on the guest list along with Jeffrey Epstein, Mark Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Sean Parker.

March 17, 2014 - Edge Dinner, Vancouver (guest list): "Elon Musk" was listed alongside "Jeffrey Epstein" at this dinner that also included Paul Allen, Jeff Bezos, Sergey Brin, Bill Gates, Yuri Milner, Nathan Myhrvold, Pierre Omidyar, Larry Page, and Nick Pritzker.

These were not mass email distributions but intimate dinners limited to approximately 20 carefully selected technology leaders, scientists, and wealthy patrons. This network likely provided the initial vector for Epstein's subsequent pursuit of closer contact with Musk.

Correspondence with Epstein#

The archive documents limited but persistent correspondence between Epstein and Musk spanning 2012 to 2017. While Epstein consistently initiated most contact, attempting to arrange meetings and visits to his properties, the pattern shows an initial period where Musk showed genuine interest and engagement before becoming increasingly brief, evasive, and ultimately unreachable.

Early Contact and Island Invitations (2012-2013)

The earliest documented direct exchange dates to November 24, 2012, when Epstein asked Musk "how many people will you be for the heli to island". On November 25, 2012 at 12:36 AM, Musk replied: "Probably just Talulah and me. What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?" No response from Epstein to this question is preserved in the archive, and no evidence confirms the trip occurred. The "wildest party" comment could be interpreted as joking or genuinely curious, but the phrasing suggests Musk had heard something about island events.

In December 2013, Musk initiated contact, writing to Epstein on December 13: "Will be in the BVI/St Bart's area over the holidays. Is there a good time to visit?" Epstein responded December 15: "any day 1st - 8th . play it by ear if you want. always space for you". Musk replied the same day: "Ok, probably the 1st then".

On December 25, Epstein wrote: "the 2 or 3 would be perfect. I will come and get you". Later that day at 12:30 PM, Musk responded: "I need to fly back to LA on the night of the 2nd, so w" [message truncated]. At 4:36 PM the same day, Musk cc'd Lesley Groff and wrote: "Actually, I could fly back early on the 3rd. We will be in St Bart's. When should we head to your island on the 2nd?" This shows Musk actively adjusting his schedule to accommodate the visit and coordinating logistics with Epstein's assistant.

However, on December 30, Epstein cancelled: "Bad news- Unfortunately, my schedule will keep me in New York. I was really looking forward to finally spending some time together with just fun as the agenda. so i am very disappointed. Hopefully we can schedule another time in the near future". Musk replied: "No problem". The phrase "finally spending some time together with just fun as the agenda" suggests the two had not yet had substantial one-on-one time despite the Edge dinners and other interactions.

On January 6, 2014, Epstein followed up: "sorry it didn't work, out just getting over it. how was your trip?", suggesting he had been genuinely ill. Musk responded simply: "Great", offering no details about attempting to reschedule.

This sequence contradicts Musk's 2019 statement to Vanity Fair. While it is true no island visit occurred, Musk was not passively declining invitations—he proactively reached out about visiting, confirmed specific dates, adjusted his travel schedule twice to accommodate the meeting, and coordinated logistics with Epstein's staff before Epstein cancelled.

SpaceX Visit (February 2013)

The most substantiated meeting between Epstein and Musk occurred in February 2013, timed to coincide with Epstein's attendance at the TED Conference in Long Beach, California. Email coordination between Epstein's assistant Lesley Groff and Musk's assistant Mary Beth Brown arranged a lunch at SpaceX headquarters.

On February 19-20, 2013, Mary Beth Brown initiated contact (email): "Shall we organize a lunch for Elon and Jeffrey to get together at SpaceX in the coming weeks? Elon is generally available at SpaceX on Mon, Thurs and Fri each week. We are located at 1 Rocket Road in Hawthorne CA 90250".

Lesley Groff coordinated security clearances, noting on February 22, 2013: "HI Mary Beth...I have the girls bringing me their passports in about an hour...I will scan and send to you". She clarified that "Jeffrey is a US citizen but he will have assistants with him who are not (2 Russian and 1 South African). They all have passports and proper paper work".

A third person with a British passport (name redacted), who was traveling as part of Epstein's entourage, emailed directly (message): "Thank you Les, Mary Beth just to let you know my citizenship and the passport I hold my visas in is actual British. Do you need the names of anyone who may accompany Jeffrey? I will be with him on the trip so please contact me at any time if you need any further information". This person's active participation in planning suggests an adult staff role rather than a victim.

Mary Beth Brown asked a significant question (email): "Just to confirm, the whole group is planning to have lunch with Elon? I'm also happy to provide a lunch for them separately so Elon & Jeffrey can chat on their own. Whatever works on your end is fine on ours". This offer to separate the groups suggests Brown understood that bringing a large entourage to a business lunch was unusual and potentially uncomfortable.

Groff noted (email) that Epstein would be "in Long Beach for TED" and knew "Elon is speaking", showing awareness of Musk's public schedule. Brown coordinated around Musk's Washington DC travel, noting "he's in DC on Tues so that week is a bit of juggle!", to which Groff replied "oh my!! what a schedule!".

The visit was confirmed for February 25, 2013 (coordination emails). SpaceX required passport scans for security clearance, which was standard procedure for facility access.

On February 26, 2013, Epstein wrote to Musk with an attached photo (IMG_6663.jpg): "thanks for the tour , you would have had fun at xmas". The photo attachment provides physical documentation of the visit. Musk replied February 28: "I see☺" with a smiley emoji.

In a July 2020 tweet, Musk denied that Epstein ever toured SpaceX, stating "Don't know where that comes from," directly contradicting this documented exchange, the coordination by his own assistant, the security clearances processed by SpaceX, and the follow-up email with photo attachment.

Continued Invitations and Declining Engagement (2014-2017)

Throughout 2014, Epstein continued reaching out with diminishing success. In September 2014, he invited Musk to the island with Reid Hoffman and Joi Ito, writing on September 18, 2014: "reid and joi will met me in palm beach the eve of the 28th and i will fly them to island. then to boston on the 30th, come". Musk declined: "Have to be in London and California on those dates". Epstein replied "another time of your choosing. just let me know".

Critically, the archive shows this invitation was for November 28-30, 2014 (Thanksgiving weekend), not September 28-30 as the invitation date might suggest. Detailed logistics emails (coordination, details) confirm the trip was planned for late November. Lesley Groff wrote: "I agree-the ultimate goal is to get Joi and Reid to Ft. Lauderdale...we will send Jeffrey's driver to pick them up and bring them back to PB where Jeffrey's plane will be...then Jeffrey will fly all to St. Thomas...from St. Thomas they hop on his heli and fly to his island...they sleep on Jeffrey's island night of the 28th and 29th then fly to Boston on Sun. Nov. 30th in Jeffrey's plane".

The trip actually occurred. An assistant coordination email (message) confirmed: "Jeffrey will fly Joi and Reid to his island on St. Thomas Nov. 28th evening...Jeffrey's island manager is Anna. Also mentions Karyna and [redacted] are the assistants that will be with Jeffrey on the trip".

Approximately two weeks later, on December 11, 2014, Epstein attempted to use this as social proof, writing to Musk: "reid was on the island last weekend, do you think you will be in carib for xmas? new years?". However, this email bounced. SpaceX.com rejected it with the message: "550 #5.1.0 Address rejected". This technical rejection suggests either SpaceX had changed email security settings or Musk's address was deliberately blocking Epstein's messages by December 2014, marking a likely end point to their direct communication.

Epstein also followed up with "caribean?". No responses from Musk to these inquiries appear in the archive.

Epstein also inquired about business matters, asking whether "any one at Solar City that my guys can talk to about electrifying the Caribbean island? or the New Mexico ranch". No date is preserved for this inquiry and no response from Musk is documented.

In February 2017, Epstein sent a brief message: "sultan is a great guy", apparently referring to Sultan Bin Sulayem, a Dubai businessman who had asked Epstein to arrange meetings with Musk regarding Tesla expansion.

Intermediaries and Network Connections

Musk's brother Kimbal Musk had a direct, personal relationship with Epstein that was more extensive than Elon's documented contact. On September 21, 2012, Boris Nikolic sent Epstein an email with subject line "Musks" (email): "Called Kimbal few times (his cell is [redacted]) but I am getting only his voice mail. Not sure where he is. I know that he has a plan for tonight — so it might be late to pull something today. Tomorrow Elon is whole day at that economic development meeting that I am skipping and he goes from there to Kimbal's bday. I will try to organize something for you guys on Sunday — although I can't attend it as I am going to Seattle Sunday morning. OK? Just talked to Mette about you ☺". Epstein replied: "nick pritsker is coming at 1.. elon can join".

Nikolic's role as active facilitator is evident throughout fall 2012. He was attempting to organize meetings between Epstein and both Musk brothers, calling Kimbal multiple times, tracking Elon's schedule in detail, and proposing specific coordination. This email establishes Nikolic as a central intermediary attempting to bring the Musks into Epstein's network.

On October 3, 2012, Epstein wrote to Elon: "kimball and boris are coming on sun .. are you around?". Musk replied: "I have to be back in CA by then".

Epstein's October 2012 calendar (document) shows frequent meetings with both Kimbal and Boris:

• October 7: "11:30 Snacks w/Kimbal Musk and MAYBE Boris to come a bit later"
• October 8: "2:45 Go for Walk w/Woody Allen (he will come to the house and ring bell)"
• October 22: "??? Boris to stop by"
• October 23: "6:30 pm - Appointment w/Boris" and "8:15 Breakfast w/Leon Botstein"
• October 24: "2:30 Appt" [with Leon Black, based on other evidence]
• October 26: "10:00am Wheels up from Meridian at Teterboro to Landmark at IAD (Dulles) with Boris"

This calendar confirms Kimbal's visit to Epstein's New York townhouse and shows Boris Nikolic had multiple appointments with Epstein throughout October 2012, including traveling together to Washington DC. Nikolic was later named as a backup executor in Epstein's will, demonstrating the depth of their relationship.

On October 23, 2012, a redacted person forwarded to Epstein an email from Kimbal about Talulah Riley's birthday party (email). Kimbal had written to this person: "The universe is conspiring for us to spend more time together. Talulah's birthday party is on Nov 17th in London". Epstein then invited this person: "stay thorugh thankisgiving. go somewhere romantic morocoo . . etc if you have no plans from th 29th to the 17th.. fly through mia to island". In a follow-up email (message), Epstein credited "[redacted name] deserves the credit" for introducing him to this person, suggesting an overlap between Kimbal's social circle and Epstein's network.

In January 24, 2013, Epstein invited Kimbal directly: "you are invited to the island for a couple of days, come relax". Kimbal replied (email): "Thanks Jeffrey. That would be nice. I'm still dealing with the nuclear explosion that is my life, but I'm hopeful that things are settling down a bit. Thanks for the invite. I'm in Europe/traveling for most of February. Maybe in the spring. Please say hi to Jennifer for me. K".

The reference to "Jennifer" indicates Kimbal knew someone by that name in Epstein's circle, suggesting familiarity with Epstein's staff or associates. The phrase "maybe in the spring" shows Kimbal leaving the possibility open rather than declining outright, though no evidence in the archive confirms he ever visited.

On February 13, 2013, Boris Nikolic forwarded to Epstein a deeply personal email from Kimbal (message): "I'm now divorced! Free to live my life. Talking to [redacted] again". This forwarding of intimate personal information demonstrates both the closeness between Nikolic and Kimbal, and Nikolic's role sharing intelligence about the Musk family with Epstein.

As late as July 24, 2015, Epstein was still attempting to use Kimbal as an access point to Elon. When Sultan Bin Sulayem asked Epstein to arrange a Tesla meeting, Epstein forwarded the request with subject line: "from sultan, are you still conact with kimball", showing he viewed Kimbal as a channel to reach Elon even after direct contact with Elon had apparently ceased.

Boris Nikolic's role as intermediary and facilitator was central to Epstein's attempts to cultivate both Musk brothers. He actively organized meetings, shared personal information, traveled with Epstein, and served as a bridge between Epstein's world and the Musk family network throughout 2012-2013.

In August 2015, Epstein wrote to Kathryn Ruemmler, former White House Counsel under President Obama, in an email dated August 1, 2015 at 1:22 PM (full email): "now now now. its an interesting question for one of your nsa gus, whether their intercepts can distinguish gender with some degree of regularity. fyi my meeting with zuckerburg has grown as they all want info on money, elon musk, thiel, reid hoffman, it will be fun". This email reveals Epstein positioning himself as a connector and information broker between tech leaders, suggesting the meeting's purpose was providing financial advice or investment connections. The fact Epstein was discussing this with a former White House Counsel while also coordinating about a Department of Justice meeting establishes the high-level nature of his networking activities. The phrase "they all want info on money" indicates Epstein was offering himself as a source of financial knowledge or connections, with Musk being invoked as a draw or topic rather than necessarily attending.

Epstein's Pattern of Name-Dropping and False Claims#

The archive documents a clear pattern of Epstein making unverified or false claims about his relationships with Musk and other prominent figures, using these claims strategically with different audiences.

On September 30, 2012 at 10:33 PM, Epstein sent an email to [email protected] (email): "This past week included, julie taymor, woody alien, elon musk, frank gehri, bottstein, hillis, bill gates, under sec general u.n., i need pr help". The recipient, Michael Wolff (journalist and author), responded October 1, 2012 (reply): "you do. you really do. and one of my favorite subjects. mornings and lunch are tough this week, but any day later in the afternoon I can get together, if you'd like. m".

This email shows Epstein was bragging about his guest list to a media figure specifically to seek PR help—curating his public image by listing high-profile visitors. Epstein's October 2012 calendar partially corroborates these claims: it confirms visits from Woody Allen (October 8: "Go for Walk w/Woody Allen"), Leon Botstein (October 23: "Breakfast w/Leon Botstein"), and Kimbal Musk (October 7: "Snacks w/Kimbal Musk"). The calendar shows these were separate individual visits over multiple weeks, not a single event. Danny Hillis (the "hillis" mentioned) was a prominent computer scientist, and Frank Gehry ("frank gehri") was the renowned architect. However, the selective presentation to a journalist suggests Epstein was carefully curating which associations he publicized.

On August 2, 2015, Epstein claimed to Sultan Bin Sulayem: "i m having dinner tonight with elon musk". This claim prompted the Sultan to send a detailed business proposal about Tesla expansion in Dubai, offering to buy 50 Tesla cars and establish operations in Jebel Ali Free Zone (Sultan's email). However, Epstein's response completely avoided mentioning Musk, instead pivoting to invite the Sultan to lunch in Beverly Hills: "Can you have lunch Tomorw. With me in bev hills".

On August 8, 2015, the Sultan followed up directly (email): "Dear Jeffery, Did you have your dinner with Elon Musk?and did you explain to him my proposal?what was his reactions?". No response from Epstein to this question is preserved in the archive, and Epstein's earlier pivot away from the Musk dinner suggests the dinner may never have occurred. The timing is also suspicious—the Sultan had asked about visiting Epstein's ranch, and Epstein claimed to be having dinner with Musk that very night, suggesting the claim may have been made to boost Epstein's perceived influence while at the ranch.

A July 22, 2019 New York Times article preserved in the archive (article) documents the broader pattern: "Mr. Epstein boasted of having advised Elon Musk after the Tesla founder's impulsive Twitter posts sent shares plummeting last summer. He has claimed to have worked closely with Lawrence Summers, the former Treasury secretary and Harvard president. He has told others he was a tax consultant to the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Representatives for the three men told The New York Times that there was no truth to Mr. Epstein's statements". The article specifically identifies Epstein's claim about advising Musk as false according to Musk's representatives, despite the documented contact in the archive.

These incidents reveal Epstein strategically deploying Musk's name with different audiences: to the Sultan (to appear well-connected for business facilitation), to Michael Wolff (for PR purposes), to Kathryn Ruemmler (for social cachet in high-level circles), and publicly (to claim advisory relationships that did not exist). The pattern suggests Epstein valued the association with Musk more for reputational currency than for any actual collaboration.

Connections#

Musk's primary connection to Epstein appears to have formed through Silicon Valley networks, particularly the Edge Foundation dinners where both were guests between 2011-2014. The archive shows Epstein frequently mentioned Musk alongside Reid Hoffman, Joi Ito, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Peter Thiel, suggesting Epstein positioned himself as a connector within the technology elite community. However, no direct correspondence between Epstein and Thiel appears in the archive, and Thiel appears to be mentioned as a target or topic rather than an active correspondent.

Musk's brother Kimbal Musk had more extensive documented interactions with Epstein, including a confirmed October 2012 meeting at Epstein's townhouse, coordination through Boris Nikolic, an invitation to the island (declined with "maybe in the spring"), and personal updates shared through intermediaries. As late as July 2015, Epstein was attempting to use Kimbal as an access point to reach Elon.

Musk's then-wife Talulah Riley attended at least two Edge Foundation dinners (March 2011 and July 2011) where Epstein was present and was expected to accompany Musk on the November 2012 and December 2013 island visit attempts. No independent correspondence from Riley to Epstein appears in the archive.

Through these networks, Musk received invitations to social gatherings that also included Epstein, though these represent the overlapping elite social circuits of Silicon Valley rather than a direct cultivated relationship between the two men.

Document References#

Beyond email correspondence, several documents reference Musk in the context of Epstein's network and activities.

In May 2014, Debra Black (likely the wife of Leon Black of Apollo Global Management, who appears in Epstein's October 2012 calendar with a "2:30 Appt" on October 24) wrote to Epstein (email): "Hi Jeffrey hope all is well I know you are friends with Elon Musk and wanted to ask a favor. Wondering if Tesla would consider participating in MRA's upcoming Leverage Finance Fights Melanoma event on May 20th at Rockefeller Center. We have 1000 guys from the leveraged finance community who come together to support MRA. We would love to connect with them to discuss bringing a car to the event and promoting the brand to an excellent demographic". No response from Epstein is documented. The fact that Debra Black "knew" Epstein was "friends with Elon Musk" demonstrates that Epstein actively promoted this connection within his Wall Street social circles, establishing his role as a purported bridge between technology leaders and finance executives.

Documents show Sultan Bin Sulayem of Dubai repeatedly asked Epstein to arrange meetings with Musk regarding Tesla expansion and solar technology in the Middle East. On July 24, 2015, the Sultan asked whether Epstein could (original email / duplicate): "arrange a meeting for me with Elon Musk I want to convince him to open his show room For Tesla in DUBAI. We have the largest free zone in the middle east with 7000 companies. We do 150 billion dollar turn over. He does not have to invest any thing we do all the investments I like to invite him for a visit and meet our people and explain to him how we can do business together. He will not pay any Income Tax , No VAT, he can buy properties and lease buildings free hold title at the best prices with all the support he needs. I am also interested in there solar system modular batteries for one of my hotels in Africa. Can u help me please we can buy minimum 50 cars as start from him". This was a legitimate, detailed business proposal from a major Dubai official offering substantial incentives.

In August 2015, after Epstein claimed "i m having dinner tonight with elon musk", the Sultan followed up on August 8 asking (email / duplicate): "Did you have your dinner with Elon Musk?and did you explain to him my proposal?what was his reactions?". As noted above, no evidence confirms this dinner occurred, and Epstein's pivot to inviting the Sultan to lunch without mentioning Musk suggests the dinner claim may have been false.

Visits to Epstein Properties#

The archive documents one confirmed visit and multiple proposed but unrealized visits:

Manhattan Townhouse:

• October 7, 2012 - Epstein's calendar (document) shows "11:30 Snacks w/Kimbal Musk and MAYBE Boris to come a bit later" — confirming a visit by Elon's brother with Boris Nikolic potentially attending
