Ehud Barak

Ehud Barak is a former Prime Minister and Defense Minister of Israel who maintained an extensive and complex relationship with Jeffrey Epstein spanning more than a decade. The Epstein archive contains 5,193 emails involving Barak, of which he was the sender in approximately 2,495 and a recipient in approximately 2,649, with correspondence dating from April 2010 through October 2023. Barak's 4,090 shared emails with Epstein make him one of the most prolific correspondents in the archive, and the communications document a relationship that intertwined business investment, Israeli politics, social networking, and personal matters.

The archive reveals that Epstein and Barak were partners in Carbyne (formerly Reporty Homeland Security Ltd.), an Israeli emergency technology company, through a network of shell entities including Ergo (E.B. 2014) Ltd. and a limited partnership called SUM (E.B.) 2015, with Epstein's Southern Trust Company, Inc. as a major limited partner. However, the financial relationship between Barak and the Epstein-Wexner network predates this by at least six years: a letter to investigators reveals that during 2004-2006, the Wexner Foundation transferred at least $2.3 million to Barak, described as "research" but with details refused, and that "Mr. Epstein signed personally on few of the transfers' forms." Epstein arranged travel, hosted dinners in Barak's honor at his Manhattan townhouse, introduced Barak to high-profile contacts, and facilitated meetings between Barak and figures including Noam Chomsky, Kathy Ruemmler, and Larry Summers. In a September 2016 email, Epstein referred to Barak as one of his "very close friends". Barak and his wife Nili Priell also maintained an apartment at 301 East 66th Street, a building where Epstein owned approximately 10 apartments, with building management communications continuing through at least 2023.

An investigative memo about Epstein's non-compliance with sex offender registration laws classified Barak among a small group of individuals with "significant knowledge" of Epstein's operations, listing him alongside Les Wexner, George Mitchell, Bill Richardson, Bill Clinton, and Doug Band. The memo also stated that "Jeffrey Epstein worked for the United States government as a financial bounty hunter" and that "He has retained significant political connections with both Israel and the United States."

Background#

Ehud Barak (born February 12, 1942) served as the 10th Prime Minister of Israel from 1999 to 2001 and as Defense Minister from 2007 to 2013. A decorated military officer, he was the most decorated soldier in Israel's history, having served as Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces. After leaving government, Barak pursued business ventures in technology and consulting. He was chairman of Carbyne (originally Reporty Homeland Security), an Israeli startup developing emergency call-handling technology. His relationship with Epstein became a significant public controversy in Israel, particularly during the 2019–2020 election cycles. Barak has publicly acknowledged his relationship with Epstein but denied any involvement in or knowledge of Epstein's criminal activity. In a 2016 email to author Michael Wolff, Epstein dismissed allegations against Barak as ludicrous, writing sarcastically about "ehud barak on a gulfstream with five secruity guards looking the other way".

The Wexner Foundation Connection (2004-2006)#

The earliest documented financial connection between Barak and the Epstein network predates the email archive by more than six years. A letter to investigators from Erez Zadok explicitly details that "During the years 2004-2006, the Wexner Foundation transferred at least 2.3 million USD to the Israeli former Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Mr. Epstein signed personally on few of the transfers' forms." The letter describes the payments as for "research" but states that "Mr. Barak and the Wexner Foundation refuse to reveal the research issue or any other details." The letter alleges this could constitute "a forbidden political contribution" and possible "Money Laundering violation, when Mr. Epstein uses The Wexner Foundation, to wire millions to Mr. Barak."

This $2.3 million transfer establishes that Barak's relationship with Epstein began no later than 2004, at least six years before the email archive's coverage begins in 2010. The fact that Epstein personally signed transfer forms for payments from the Wexner Foundation to a former Israeli Prime Minister is significant, as it demonstrates Epstein's direct role in financial flows between Leslie Wexner's philanthropic vehicle and Israeli political figures. The investigative memo that lists both Barak and Wexner as individuals with "significant knowledge" of Epstein's operations suggests these financial ties may have been part of a broader relationship involving all three men.

Correspondence with Epstein#

Timeframe and Volume

The email archive documents direct communication between Barak and Epstein from at least 2010 through early 2019, with building-management emails involving Barak's apartment continuing through October 2023. The correspondence is dense and sustained, with emails exchanged on topics ranging from Israeli politics and business deals to personal favors and health concerns. Epstein sent from the address [email protected] (signed as "J"), while Barak used multiple addresses including [email protected] and [email protected].

Business Partnership: Carbyne/Reporty

A significant portion of the correspondence concerns their shared investment in Carbyne (formerly Reporty Homeland Security Ltd.). Financial documents in the archive detail the corporate structure: Barak's entity Ergo (E.B. 2014) Ltd. served as general partner of SUM (E.B.) 2015 – Limited Partnership, which held equity in Reporty. Epstein's Southern Trust Company, Inc. was a limited partner holding 33.33% of partnership interests and 66.67% of "Preferred Rights," while Montilla International Corporation, a British Virgin Islands entity controlled by Nicole Junkermann, held 16.67% of partnership interests and 33.33% of Preferred Rights. Barak's own entity Cogito (E.B.) 2015 Ltd. held 49.99%.

A March 2015 non-recourse promissory note documents that Southern Trust lent $1,000,000 to Ergo (E.B. 2014) Ltd. at 3% interest to fund the purchase of Series A Preferred Shares in Reporty, with the note explicitly stating that "Ehud Barak is the sole beneficial owner of the Borrower." A January 2016 agreement converted this loan into a partnership interest in SUM, giving Southern Trust preferred distribution rights and the power to replace the general partner if Barak became incapacitated or lost control of Ergo.

A December 2016 Carbyne monthly report reveals the company's extensive pursuit of government contracts globally. The report documents meetings with Washington DC 911, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, NYPD 911, and AT&T in the United States. Internationally, Carbyne was pursuing deals in Singapore (SCDF and Police, with a $462K pilot), Colombia (Medellín, valued at $1.2M/year), Romania (Bucharest), France (Marseille security and French Federal Police), Malaysia, Indonesia (PT Telkom), Philippines, Morocco, Dubai Police, and Abu Dhabi Police, with initial interest from Canada and Scandinavia.

Most significantly, the report reveals the creation of "Graphen" — described as an "Undisclosed Agency" entity created to "sale and hold Reporty IP under a different names and brand" specifically to serve "Countries where Reporty IL can't sale." A key operational parameter was listed as: "Level of discretion required regarding the Israeli ownership and control." This entity was explicitly designed to conceal the Israeli origins of Carbyne's technology when selling to countries where such disclosure would be problematic, particularly in the Middle East, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi police listed as target customers.

The December 2016 report also documents Carbyne's other investors beyond Epstein: Robert Kraft ($1M), Yaron Eitan ($1M), Colibri ($1.35M), "Far East" ($1M), "Cathy" ($0.5M), Vincent ($0.5M), and Ran Steinman ($0.15M), for a total of $5.5M delivered in the CL round. The report notes that Carbyne had hired the law firm Covington for US operations.

In March 2019, the archive captures an active warrant exercise for Carbyne shares. In a thread involving attorney Tomer Toor, Darren Indyke, and Nikolajs of NJF Capital, the parties arranged for $3.6 million in funding to exercise warrants that would increase SUM's stake in Carbyne from approximately 13% to approximately 26.33%. The funding breakdown was $2,400,000 (66.67%) from Southern Trust and $1,200,000 (33.33%) from Montilla International (Junkermann's BVI entity). Epstein intermediated between Barak and investor Nicole Junkermann, writing to her that "ehud said your money was not yet received for the warrant excercise". Barak responded to the group: "I'm sure it'll be all ok. Looking forward."

Confirmation that the $3.6 million was received came from Toor on March 11, 2019, along with a request for additional anti-money-laundering documentation from the Israeli bank. Barak's response is revealing: "That's the Israeli banks paranoia after they paid the penalties they've paid to the US authorities for past mistakes. According to our experience it was never leaked out of the banks. Just kept with them as an insurance policy. We have to follow on it. On a minimal but satisfying base." His characterization of providing AML documentation on a "minimal but satisfying base" (meaning the minimum necessary to satisfy the bank) and his reference to Israeli banks' "paranoia" after paying penalties to US authorities for "past mistakes" demonstrates awareness of money laundering compliance issues while advocating a minimalist approach to documentation.

Israeli Politics and Personal Matters

Barak confided in Epstein about sensitive Israeli political dynamics. In a March 2019 exchange, after Epstein wrote that "Yoni" was "getting special attention now. mitzvah", Barak replied with a candid assessment of internal Israeli politics: "'Our' rival Ashkenazi, former CoS of the IDF is a prominent member of Gantz party. Yoni attacks him and expect me to make it a major issue even at the price of damaging their campaign. Which I don't think make sense. He feels 'deserted' which is painful but not true." Barak thanked Epstein "from the bottom of our hearts" for his support.

The "Yoni" referenced throughout the correspondence is identified in Epstein's February 2013 schedule as Yoni Koren, with the schedule noting: "Reminder: Yoni Koren to stay in Apt 10B Feb. 10-22." This confirms that Koren, like Barak, stayed in apartments at 301 East 66th Street controlled by Epstein. Koren appears to have been both a close associate of Barak and someone involved in Israeli political attacks during the 2019 campaign. The reference to Koren attacking Gabi Ashkenazi, the former IDF Chief of Staff who joined Benny Gantz's party, provides insight into the factional dynamics of the September 2019 Israeli election, where Barak formed the Democratic Union party and faced attacks from Netanyahu's Likud regarding his Epstein ties.

Epstein facilitated medical connections for Yoni Koren, who appears to have been seriously ill. In April 2019, Yoni wrote to Lesley Groff: "Yesterday I met Dr. Fisch and we discussed both the illness and the trial." Barak responded: "U R Great! Hope is what holds him alive." The phrase "hope is what holds him alive" suggests a serious, possibly terminal condition. In another thread, Epstein connected "ehud harry yoni" — putting Barak, Dr. Harry Fisch, and Yoni Koren in direct email contact. The reference to "the trial" in Yoni's message could refer to either a clinical trial for his medical condition or potentially legal proceedings, though the context suggests the former.

When news broke in March 2019 about Barak's phone and computer allegedly being hacked by Iranian intelligence, Richard Kahn forwarded the Jerusalem Post article to Epstein, who in turn sent it to Barak. Barak dismissed the report as "Nonsense. Simple phishing. No Trojan horse." Epstein joked: "maybe they could send me some iranian caviar now that they have my address".

Around the same time, Barak asked Epstein: "Hope the public attention weakens?" — an apparent reference to renewed media scrutiny of Epstein's legal troubles. On February 26, 2019, Epstein sent Barak a New York Times article about calls for Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta to resign over his handling of Epstein's original plea deal, in a thread titled "very political not my skill set". Barak simply replied, "C U later." On March 4, 2019, Epstein sent Barak another NYT article (likely an opinion or letters piece about Epstein), and Barak replied: "VG. Content. Then the collective signing. On other note: Shall we see you before leaving to IL?" This suggests Barak was actively asking to see Epstein in person even as public scrutiny of Epstein intensified, and that they were involved in "collective signing" of unspecified documents. The last documented correspondence with Barak in the archive is the April 3, 2019 email about Yoni's meeting with Dr. Fisch — three months before Epstein's arrest on July 6, 2019.

The Noam Chomsky Connection

In June 2015, Epstein brokered an intellectual exchange between Barak and linguist and political dissident Noam Chomsky. The extended email correspondence reveals Epstein as an active political intermediary. On June 23, 2015, Epstein wrote to Chomsky: "ehud barak will be with me for the weekend in ny. not sure where you are?" Chomsky responded: "Have a good weekend. I wonder what he thinks about where the state is heading now."

The next day, Epstein relayed specific political assessments from Barak to Chomsky: "1. do you have any specific questions for him? he thinks its not going in the right direction. ie. bibi, not strong enough to make tough decisions. ehud trusts hamas more than abbas. I know you dont like telephones but we could set up a text exchange if you wanted to." Epstein's willingness to relay Barak's private view that he "trusts hamas more than abbas" — a statement that would be politically explosive if made publicly — demonstrates both the intimacy of the Barak-Epstein relationship and Epstein's role as a facilitator of high-level political discourse.

Chomsky expressed deep concerns about Israel's trajectory in the same thread: "Forty years ago, Israel was one of the most admired countries in the world. Now it is most disliked." Epstein also offered to arrange for Chomsky to visit New York in September during the UN General Assembly, writing: "my house becomes a respite for the select few, to take off their ties, and talk openly." This demonstrates how Epstein leveraged his relationship with Barak — using access to the former Israeli Prime Minister's political insights — to deepen his connection with Chomsky, while simultaneously positioning his Manhattan townhouse as a venue for off-the-record elite discourse.

Social Networking and Introductions

Epstein actively leveraged his relationship with Barak to draw high-profile figures into his social orbit — and vice versa. In September 2010, Epstein organized a dinner at his Manhattan townhouse honoring Barak, who was then Israeli Defense Minister. The dinner guest list compiled by Lesley Groff shows invitations to Tom Barrack, Arthur Sulzberger, Steve Schwarzman, David Gergen, Len Blavatnik, Jes Staley, Tom Pritzker, Charlie Rose, Larry Summers, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Ron Perelman, General Wes Clark, Walter Isaacson, and Lloyd Blankfein. Notably, an investigative memo about Epstein lists "Jes Staley" under "Individuals Who Have Engaged in Massages with Epstein Girls," meaning a guest invited to the dinner honoring Barak was flagged in law enforcement materials for sexual engagement with Epstein's victims. The invitation, as sent to Sulzberger, described the event as "very private, no agenda" at Epstein's home at "9 East 71st Street between 5th and Madison." Summers responded he could attend "in 8 or later range". After the dinner, Epstein invited Barak through Sarah Kellen to schedule "a four eyes" meeting, and Nili Priell wrote back that they "enjoyed the evening food and conversation".

In the same September 2010 trip, Epstein wrote to Boris Nikolic that "Ehud Barak the defense minister of Israel, Larry Summers will be at my house for a small very private dinner, if Bill wants to come or stop by", referring to Bill Gates. He described the dinner as "the epicenter of intellectual interest."

The pattern of Epstein hosting social dinners for Barak continued over many years, directly contradicting Barak's later public claims that he only attended business meetings with Epstein during business hours. On February 15, 2013, Epstein's schedule shows "8:00pm DINNER w/Ehud Barak and Larry Summers" — an evening social event. A scheduling email from Lesley Groff reveals the deliberate curation of these gatherings: "Is it ok to confirm Larry Summers to come at 8pm also for dinner on 15th? of does JE want alone time with Barak?" This shows Epstein carefully orchestrating whether to include Summers or have exclusive time with Barak. Another Groff email asks: "What would you like for dinner tonight with Larry Summers and Barak?" The February 15, 2013 dinner was followed the next morning by Epstein, Larry and Lisa Summers, and Woody Allen's family flying together to Palm Beach: "10:00am Jojo and [redacted] Pick up Larry and Lisa Summers from the Mark Hotel, then come back and pick up JE from the house!" then "11:00am Wheels up to PB with Woody Allen, Soon Yi, Manzie, Nanny Morgan, Larry and Lisa Summers." This sequence reveals how Epstein used dinners with Barak as entry points for broader social networking, seamlessly connecting Israeli politics, Harvard economics, and Hollywood celebrity.

This pattern continued over the years. In April 2013, Epstein's schedule showed a 2:00 PM appointment with Barak at the townhouse. In April 2013, Epstein wrote to Ghislaine Maxwell asking her to invite Mark Lasry to "stop by on thurs, to meet ehud barak and mandelson. mort zuckerman etc", documenting Maxwell's direct role in arranging social events that included Barak. In June 2013, the schedule showed a 4:00 PM appointment with Barak followed the next day by lunch with Barak and Bob Kerrey. In September 2013, Epstein invited Joel Klein to "a breakfast with me and ehud barak", and separately invited another contact to "breakfast with ehud barak at 1130".

In September 2016, Epstein introduced Barak to Deepak Chopra at an Aspen event, writing: "my very close friends joi ito. head of mit media lab, ehud barak former defense ministere and prime misiter of israel are both in aspen with you".

Epstein also arranged for Barak to visit Harvard in September 2015, with Lesley Groff emailing a Mr. Friedman that "Jeffrey Epstein will be up at Harvard today with Ehud Barak" and noting that "Mr Barak is also staying at the Charles Hotel." Epstein chartered a JetSuite flight from Washington DC to Boston for Barak, his wife Nili Priell, and aide Tal Golbary. On that same October 2015 trip, Groff invited Lawrence Krauss to join lunch with Barak at Epstein's house the next day at 12:30, and separately noted she was "getting info on Antaractica cruise for ehud barak".

In March 2019, Epstein introduced Barak to Kathy Ruemmler, the former White House Counsel, writing: "kathy - ehud. ehud- kathy kathy is in tel aviv until wed". Barak then invited Ruemmler to his Tel Aviv residence for coffee or drinks at 6:30 PM.

A February 2013 schedule also documents that Nicole Junkermann's involvement with Epstein extended beyond Carbyne investment. The schedule notes that "Michael Wolff & Nicole Junkermann to sit in on meetings" for "QUANT MEETINGS" organized by Todd Meister on February 20-21, 2013, showing Junkermann participated in Epstein's quantitative trading activities years before the Carbyne warrant exercise.

Awareness of Epstein's Legal Situation

The correspondence shows Barak was aware of Epstein's legal troubles. In March 2019, Barak wrote to Epstein: "Hope the public attention weakens?" Epstein shared a New York Times article about calls for Alexander Acosta's resignation related to Epstein's plea deal. The archive also captures Epstein asking Barak about seeing each other before Barak's departure, and Barak responding about "the collective signing" of unspecified documents. This indicates they were in each other's physical presence shortly before Epstein's July 2019 arrest.

Connections#

Barak's most extensive connection in the archive is with Jeffrey Epstein himself, with 4,090 shared emails. His second most frequent co-correspondent is Nicole Junkermann, with 174 shared emails, largely relating to their shared investment in Carbyne and the warrant exercise. Jabor Al Thani appears in 141 shared emails. Nili Priell, Barak's wife, appears in 116 shared emails and coordinated travel and scheduling through Epstein's assistants, as early as August 2010 when she wrote to Sarah Kellen about planned visits to Washington and the Clinton convention.

Lesley Groff, Epstein's executive assistant, appears in 91 shared emails and handled dinner invitations, travel logistics, and building management for Barak's apartment. Boris Collardi and Cedric Heri appear in 42 and 33 shared emails respectively. Boris Nikolic appears in 18 shared emails and was involved in the September 2010 dinner invitation. Sarah Kellen, an Epstein associate later identified as an alleged co-conspirator, appears in 18 shared emails and coordinated Barak's visits as early as 2010. Darren Indyke, Epstein's attorney, appears in 17 shared emails, primarily relating to Carbyne corporate transactions. Noam Chomsky appears in 8 shared emails; in June 2015, Epstein suggested to Chomsky that "ehud barak will be with me for the weekend in ny" and acted as an intermediary relaying Barak's political assessments to Chomsky and soliciting Chomsky's questions for Barak. Joi Ito appears in 10 shared emails and attended the same Aspen event as Barak in September 2016.

The investigative memo also confirms that Ghislaine Maxwell was directly involved in organizing social events involving Barak, and lists both Maxwell and Lesley Groff in the "Inner Circle of Jeffrey Epstein."

Barak and his corporate entities appear extensively in financial and legal documents in the archive. A $1,000,000 non-recourse promissory note dated March 2015 from Southern Trust Company, Inc. to Ergo (E.B. 2014) Ltd. financed the initial investment in Reporty Homeland Security Ltd. The same schedule documents "Reminder: Yoni Koren to stay in Apt 10B Feb. 10-22" and "Bobby Slayton stay in Apt 11B," confirming that Epstein controlled multiple specific apartment units at 301 East 66th Street and that Yoni Koren stayed in one of them. A September 2014 schedule shows "TBD Ehud Barak (Kathy Ruemmler is in NY and would love to join)" for September 25, 2014. The September 2010 dinner guest list compiled by Lesley Groff for a dinner at Epstein's townhouse honoring Barak as Defense Minister documents the invitation of numerous prominent business, media, and political figures to Epstein's home.

The Deutsche Bank presentation to the Southern District of New York, dated September 12, 2019, catalogs Epstein's financial accounts, including those of Southern Trust Company, Inc. — the entity that served as the primary financial conduit for Epstein's investment in Barak's Carbyne venture.

A letter to investigators from Erez Zadok details the 2004-2006 Wexner Foundation transfers to Barak totaling at least $2.3 million, with Epstein personally signing transfer forms, and alleges potential violations of Israeli political contribution laws and money laundering statutes.

Visits to Epstein Properties#

Manhattan townhouse (9 East 71st Street)

The archive documents multiple visits and meetings that reveal a pattern of regular social and business interaction, directly contradicting Barak's public claims that he only attended daytime business meetings:

301 East 66th Street apartments

Barak and his wife Nili Priell maintained an apartment in a building where Epstein owned approximately 10 apartments. The apartment arrangement is a substantial ongoing financial benefit. Building management emails from Lesley Groff to "Barak & Associates, L.L.C." address Nili directly about delivering 24 packages and coordinating locksmith and exterminator access (May 15, 2019), disarming alarms for exterminator visits (June 4, 2019), installing new door lock batteries (May 31, 2019), and scheduling maintenance (October 5, 2023). These emails span from at least May 2019 through October 2023 — continuing more than four years after Epstein's death in August 2019.

The February 2013 schedule confirms that Yoni Koren also stayed in apartments in the same building: "Reminder: Yoni Koren to stay in Apt 10B Feb. 10-22" and "Bobby Slayton stay in Apt 11B." This establishes that multiple Barak associates were lodged in Epstein-controlled units at the building.

The continuation of building management communications through October 2023 raises significant questions about whether Barak continues to maintain the apartment arrangement with Epstein's estate, who now manages the building, and what financial arrangements govern the ongoing use of the property.

Criminal Activity#

The archive contains evidence that Barak was specifically accused of sexual abuse by one of Epstein's victims, and that Epstein's legal team discussed these accusations in the context of a coordinated media response.

Accusation by Virginia Giuffre

On January 1, 2015, Alan Dershowitz — Epstein's longtime defense attorney — circulated a draft op-ed titled "Response to Rape Charges" to Epstein and attorney Martin Weinberg. In an accompanying message, Dershowitz wrote: "I need confirmation that she accused Barak and Mitchell. I remember hearing that but I don't recall if I saw it in print. I know she accused Clinton and Andrew." The "she" refers to Virginia Giuffre (then Virginia Roberts), an Epstein victim who filed a sworn statement accusing multiple prominent men of sexual abuse facilitated by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Dershowitz's email confirms that Giuffre's accusations against Barak were known within Epstein's legal circle. Continued Relationship Post-Conviction

Barak's relationship with Epstein continued and deepened for more than a decade after Epstein's 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor. The financial relationship, however, began even earlier: the Wexner Foundation transfers of $2.3 million during 2004-2006, with Epstein personally signing transfer forms, establish a financial connection that predates Epstein's conviction by at least four years.

Barak was also in regular contact with Sarah Kellen, later identified as one of Epstein's alleged co-conspirators, who coordinated his visits to Epstein's properties as early as September 2010. The investigative memo lists both Sarah Kellen and Ghislaine Maxwell in Epstein's "Inner Circle," and documents that Jes Staley — who was invited to the September 2010 dinner honoring Barak — is listed under "Individuals Who Have Engaged in Massages with Epstein Girls." This means Barak attended a social dinner where at least one guest was flagged by law enforcement for sexual engagement with Epstein's victims.

The memo states: "At some point in time, Jeffrey Epstein worked for the United States government as a financial bounty hunter.
